Sunday, Oct. 15 - Hike of Purcells Cove Backlands

What: Guided Hike into the Purcells Cove Backlands (Registration required)
When: 9:30 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
About: This relatively easy hike will guide you through the fascinating, rare Jack Pine barren ecosystem of the Backlands. The trail terrain is uneven and requires good footwear. The hike involves lots of small slopes up and down on exposed bedrock. Registration is required. Click here to register.

Sunday, Oct. 15 - Cycling Audit Ride

What: Cycling Audit Ride (Registration required)
When: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
About: We will ride to a number of key destinations in Spryfield and evaluate the route to get there as well as facilities at the destination. All participants are expected to fill out an evaluation which will be provided. The route will include segments on busy roads with no bike lanes or other infrastructure so participants should be prepared for that.

About: A Walk Audit is a simple tool to help you as a participant rate the walkability of a portion of your community. The intent of the findings of the audit is to create livable communities for people of all ages and abilities by pinpointing how safe a space feels for people moving around. We'll look at pedestrian safety factors like crossing the street, appeal of the walk, facilities along the walk and traffic. At the end of the walk we'll discuss our findings for submission to our HRM Councillor. In the event of heavy rain we will set a rain date. Register for the walk audit here

About: The Nova Scotia Alliance for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity is hosting a one-day gathering to bring together researchers, non-profit leaders, public health workers, community health boards, and those with lived experience to start a dialogue about how we can support Solution 6 of the Action for Health plan. During this one-day summit, leaders from across sectors will come together to share knowledge, explore gaps, and identify opportunities for collective action to support the government in achieving Solution 6 of Nova Scotia’s Action For Health plan. If you want to contribute to a healthier, more equitable province, this event is for you! Join others working to inspire an equitable future for Nova Scotia to learn about what is happening and shape what is needed.

When: Sunday, Oct. 22, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the Dal Bike Centre
About: This ride will leave from Dal Bike Center to the Captain William Spryfield Library, where it will join up with the Mayor's bike ride -looping thru Spryfield and then return to Dalhousie. Please note, this ride will include steep hills and riding in high volume traffic. Please arrive at the Dal Bike Center for 9:30 - departing at 9:45.

Sunday, Oct. 22 - Mayor's Bike Ride

What: Mayor's Bike Ride 
When: 11 a.m.– 1 p.m. start at Captain William Spry Community Centre (16 Sussex St., Halifax)

About: The Halifax Regional Municipality and CAA Atlantic invite you to join Mayor Mike Savage and Regional Councillors for the 10th annual Mayor’s Ride on Sunday, October 22, 2023 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.). 

The Mayor’s Ride aims to promote cycling and to celebrate active transportation in the municipality. The ride also highlights the role that supporters of healthy & active communities (like you!) are playing in the Halifax region. This popular event routinely attracts 50+ riders and broad media coverage. 

This year’s ride begins at the Captain William Spry Community Centre (16 Sussex St., Halifax). The route will explore Spryfield by bike via the McIntosh Run Community Trail, the Herring Cove Road bike lane and residential area streets. A reception with refreshments will follow afterwards at the Captain William Spry Community Centre.

SOLD OUT | Monday Oct. 23 - Bike Summit

What: Bike Summit
When: Monday, Oct. 23 - 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Captain William Spry Community Centre
About: This will be the 18th year of the Bike Summit hosted by Cycling Nova Scotia.! The goal is to share all of the infrastructure, programming, and policy work that has been completed or is in progress across the province and to have conversations about challenges and opportunities going forward.  

The presentations during the event will provide resources and tools for AT professionals to use in their workplaces and provide networking opportunities for future collaborations. These connections will no doubt support future policy and infrastructure projects, and effectively encourage more Nova Scotians to live more active lifestyles safely and with enthusiasm.

Tuesday, Oct. 24 - Women’s Safety Audit

What: Women’s Safety Audit
When: Tuesday, Oct. 24, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Captain William Spry Public Library
About: You are invited to join HRM’s Safe City & Safe Public Spaces Program, Councillor Patty Cuttell, community members and partners for a Women’s Safety Assessment (WSA) along Herring Cove Rd. in Spryfield on Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 6-8:30 p.m.

We will start the assessment at the front entrance of the Captain William Spry Community Centre and end with a debrief and light refreshments. The assessment will consist of walking/rolling together along Herring Cove Rd., using the WSA tool as a prompt to discuss your insights and experiences of the social, natural, and built elements of the space through a gendered safety lens. The assessment route is outlined on the attached map. Please come prepared to be outside and to walk/roll on the sidewalk!

Insights shared in this process are compiled in a report by the Public Safety Office and distributed to participants, community partners and other HRM staff. The report can be used by participants, community members and municipal staff to make changes to the public space so it is safer, more enjoyable, and equitable for all.

What: Urban Cycling Course (Registration required)
When: Saturday, Oct. 28, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Captain William Spry Public Library​​​​​​
About: Improve your skills and knowledge for riding in the city. It is open to the public but preference will be given to Spryfield residents. The Urban Cycling course is intended for youth and adults (16 years of age and older) who know how to ride a bike but want to deepen their skills for riding with traffic in an urban setting.
