Food & Climate Primer

Food & Climate Primer

Climate change is an immediate, multi-faceted crisis that threatens the health and stability of food systems. Likewise, food system activities result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to climate change. As our climate changes, so will food security.

However, we are not powerless to the impacts of climate change on our food system. The Food Team works to build the resilience and capacity of our local food system and to support regional producers and consumers in reducing GHG emissions related to food system activities.

Farmers for Climate Solutions

Farmers for Climate Solutions

As stewards of the land, farmers understand the importance of protecting our environment. Farmers also understand that their livelihoods will be disproportionately affected by climate change. Across the country, crops lie unharvested under snow, late frosts kill blossoms on fruit trees, extreme weather events damage crops and soil and droughts become more and more frequent. As climate change escalates, these challenges will worsen.

As a member of Farmers for Climate Solutions, the Food Team works to advance agricultural policies and programming that support farmers to reduce emissions and build resilience in the face of climate change. By creating space for farmers to share stories about climate impacts, practical solutions and policy recommendations, we seek to create a dialogue between farmers, the public and decision-makers to find practical climate solutions.
