In addition to threatening the well-being of local communities and the surrounding environment – an area rich with wetlands and biodiversity – open pit gold mining actively contributes to the climate crisis. The Ecology Action Centre is working to protect the local environment and communities by advocating against the advancement of this type of mining in Nova Scotia.
Open Pit Gold Mining in Nova Scotia
Open Pit Gold Mining in Nova Scotia
Currently, there is one active open pit gold mine operating in Nova Scotia. However, several more are proposed. We do not support current or proposed operations of open pit gold mining due to its indefensible impact on the environment and the lack of necessity of the product. Gold can be recycled infinitely, and there is already more than enough mined gold to meet the needs of humans.
An argument in favor of the mine in Nova Scotia is job creation. However, the economic impacts associated with open pit gold mining are short lived. The environmental degradation, however, continues into the long-term.
We are concerned about the serious harm these mining activities inflict on species at risk and the overall ecosystem.
