The Ecology Action Centre congratulates Prime Minister Carney and his team on the release of A Force of Nature: Canada's Strategy to Protect Nature. We are very pleased to see Canadaās recommitment to protect 30 per cent of its lands and waters by 2030, and to meet our obligations under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This $3.8 billion investment represents a meaningful effort to close the gap between Canada's biodiversity goals and on-the-ground results, which have faced many challenges in recent years.

The Ecology Action Centre is deeply concerned about the ecological and democratic implications of restructuring the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in order to ādrive economic development.ā As part of these changes to DNR, the Houston government abruptly fired seven people and completely eliminated the Wildlife Division at DNR. Managers of biodiversity, managers of ecosystems and habitats and the head of the Wildlife Division all lost their jobs, and Nova Scotiaās wildlife lost its dedicated voice within government.

Doing so would jeopardize over a decade of community-led efforts to protect an area of outstanding conservation value and undermine the Provinceās own commitments on protected areas.
Thursday, June 19, 2025 - Earlier this month, the federal government tabled the Act to Enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act (Bill C-5).
