How can we build better buildings in Nova Scotia?
Research shows that we could be constructing buildings that are more resilient, healthier and better for the environment. There are many ways we could make buildings better here in Nova Scotia and that is what this series of online presentations is all about. Architects, engineers, custom builders, contractors, developers and educators are encouraged to attend these presentations, ask questions and share information that can help everyone build more sustainable buildings.

Molly Merriman, Adsum Sunflower Court: Net-zero long-term housing – Tuesday, Sept. 24, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Sunflower Court is a net-zero-ready 25-unit long-term rental housing development and community centre for Adsum for Women and Children, a local not-for-profit in Halifax and recipient of the first round of Federal Rapid Housing Initiative funding in 2020. Molly Merriman is a project architect working with Passive Design Solutions, a Nova Scotia based residential design firm specializing in Passive and Net-Zero housing.

Environmental sustainability and healthy buildings with Village Consulting – Wednesday, Oct. 30, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
With a focus on sustainable buildings, infrastructure, communities, transportation, business operations, and policy Village Consulting works to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment in a financially and socially responsible way. Founders Kiefer Mackenzie and Kristen Yee Loong will speak to you about their work across Canada.

Panelized retrofit toolkit – Wednesday, Nov. 27, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Timon Bruulsema, Zahra Williams and Sean Kelly present the summation of several studies on the potential for panelized retrofits in Nova Scotia, and particularly a two-storey, 19-unit residential building in Dartmouth, owned by VIDA Living. Retrofit Canada defines a panelized retrofit as using “cutting-edge imaging technology to design pre-built panels. These airtight, super-insulated panels are built offsite and attached to the outside of existing buildings.” A key advantage is minimizing disturbance to tenants during retrofits. The toolkit provides general information for those curious about this type of process as well as introductory technological information for more seasoned property owners, project managers and technical workers.
